On February 10, the Roseville Police Department in Northern California commemorated the 30th anniversary of the tragic death of Officer Mark A. White, a dedicated three-year veteran of the force fondly remembered by his colleagues and the community he served for his unwavering commitment, compassion and lighthearted personality. He was also a dedicated husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend. “Mark wasn’t just a good cop — he was a great cop. He was tough but fair. He loved to play practical jokes on his friends and co-workers and was a good sport when someone got one up on him,” reflects his widow, Liz White-Dibb, his high school sweetheart, with whom he had two children. “Mark loved the city of Roseville and the citizens he swore to protect. His last assignment was Community Oriented Policing, and he loved it. He was assigned a bicycle and went out each day trying to make Roseville a better place to live.” Read More

On May 6, PORAC returned to the State Capitol for its annual Legislative Day, engaging in crucial conversations with lawmakers about the policies shaping California’s law enforcement landscape. The day provided PORAC’s leadership with the opportunity to advocate for legislative priorities that safeguard officer rights, enhance public safety and strengthen the profession. This year, PORAC leaders discussed several high-priority sponsored bills, including AB 284 (RIPA reform), AB 340 (confidentiality in union representation), SB 734 (due process in Racial Justice Act hearings), AB 1383 (public safety pension reform), AB 400 (standardized K-9 policies), AB 992 (education standards for law enforcement) and SB 459 (group peer support confidentiality). Law enforcement members, survivors, supporters and families gathered at the California Peace Officers’ Memorial Monument in Sacramento on May 4 and 5 to honor those who gave their lives in the line of duty. Since 1962, May 15 has been designated as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which it falls as National Police Week — a time “to pay tribute to the law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and to voice our appreciation for all those who currently serve on the front lines of the battle against crime,” according to the joint resolution by Congress that was signed by President John F. Kennedy. Each May, peace officers, surviving family members and law enforcement supporters across the country join together in local, state and national ceremonies to remember all the brave men and women who have given their lives in the line of duty, both in the past year and throughout history. Each year during the second week of April, the law enforcement community comes together to celebrate National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, a time to recognize the invaluable role of dispatchers and operators and their contributions to the profession.
