PORAC leaders visited Washington, D.C., to meet with numerous members of California’s congressional delegation and their staff, as well as other key legislators and federal officials, to advocate for policies and legislation that support the enforcement profession and strengthen public safety. These meetings were an opportunity to not only convey the priorities and concerns of California peace officers to D.C. decision-makers, but also forge new collaborations and strengthen existing partnerships to continue furthering the Association’s goals. Each year, PORAC’s Peace Officers Relief and Education Foundation (POREF) is honored to make scholarship grants available to the dependents of our active and retired members, the spouse or dependents of an active member who died in the line of duty, and members who have medically retired from a regular PORAC association. For the past three Decembers, the jolly man in the red suit has received crucial assistance in bringing seasonal cheer and goodwill to the eastern L.A. County community of El Monte. Decked out in his signature color and riding in a “sleigh” better suited to the snowless streets of Southern California — the El Monte Police Department’s BearCat SWAT vehicle — Blue Santa leads a festive caravan of law enforcement officers and local officials around town, delivering gifts to families experiencing hardship and helping them enjoy a happier holiday. A total of 715 delegates representing 177 associations made their way to San Diego, braving unseasonably stormy fall weather to attend the 73rd annual PORAC Conference of Members November 20–22 at the Sheraton Resort. Members cast their ballots in contested elections for president and vice president, voted on bylaw amendments, received updates from PORAC’s trusts and partners, took part in an SB 2 training session, met with sponsors, toured 60 vendor booths at the exhibitor expo and connected with fellow peace officers from across the state.
