PORAC Opposes the First Step Act

PORAC Opposition Letter on First Step Act

As longtime opponents to AB 109, Proposition 47 and 57, it would be inconsistent to now support a federal version of these bills. PORAC relayed our concerns to those involved in the crafting of this legislation and the advocates have taken some steps to improve the bill. Yet, a number of serious felonies, including violent crimes, are still eligible for early release.

“PORAC recognizes the need for criminal justice reform and would be eager to work with Congress to come up with a coordinated, constructive approach for prison and sentencing reform.  We do not believe, though, the First Step Act embodies this approach – rather, it will place an undue burden on law enforcement and complicate further our mission of protecting the public.”
