Law enforcement members, survivors, supporters and their families came together at the California Peace Officers’ Memorial Monument in Sacramento on May 5 and 6 to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. This year’s California Peace Officers’ Memorial Ceremonies at the State Capitol on May 5 and 6 honored the following four officers who we lost in 2023: Deputy Darnell Calhoun (Riverside County Sheriff’s Office, EOW 1/13/23), Officer Gonzalo Carrasco Jr. (Selma Police Department, EOW 1/31/23), Deputy Ryan Clinkunbroomer (Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, EOW 9/16/23) and Officer Tuan Le (Oakland Police Department, EOW 12/29/23).
The names of three members of the Los Angeles Police Department who passed away three years ago as a result of contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty were also added to the memorial monument: Officer Philip T. Sudario (EOW 1/25/21), Sergeant Patricia Guillen (EOW 1/28/21) and Sergeant Anthony White (EOW 4/15/21).
In addition, the memorial enrolled one officer from the distant past, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Detective Donald A. Mason, who died of a heart attack on December 23, 1959, after being struck in the chest by a suspect who attacked him while he was testifying in court.
These brave heroes join the more than 1,600 law enforcement officers who have given their all since California became a state. While solemn and emotional for all in attendance, the event was important because it allowed families to see their loved ones formally memorialized and honored for their sacrifice. PORAC thanks our state’s heroes and promises we will never forget.
