PORAC Advocates for Officer Rights and Public Safety
On May 6, PORAC returned to the State Capitol for its annual Legislative Day, engaging in crucial conversations with lawmakers about the policies shaping California’s law enforcement landscape. The day provided PORAC’s leadership with the opportunity to advocate for legislative priorities that safeguard officer rights, enhance public safety and strengthen the profession.
This year, PORAC leaders discussed several high-priority sponsored bills, including AB 284 (RIPA reform), AB 340 (confidentiality in union representation), SB 734 (due process in Racial Justice Act hearings), AB 1383 (public safety pension reform), AB 400 (standardized K-9 policies), AB 992 (education standards for law enforcement) and SB 459 (group peer support confidentiality). Each bill reflects PORAC’s commitment to improving conditions for law enforcement professionals while building stronger, safer communities.
Equally important were the discussions surrounding legislation that PORAC opposes due to its potential impact on officer safety and public trust. These included AB 622, which would allow early parole for violent offenders; AB 572, which would hinder timely interviews after critical incidents; and SB 277, which would severely restrict consent searches.
Following a full day of legislative meetings, members gathered at Mix Downtown for an evening reception that provided space to debrief, network and continue building the relationships essential for impactful advocacy. Legislative Day 2025 once again underscored PORAC’s dedication to representing its members and ensuring their voices are heard at the highest levels of government.
