On any given day, hundreds of peace officers in the East Bay city of Alameda pass by the Alameda Police Officers Memorial before starting their shifts. The memorial garden was strategically built outside the Police Administration Building on Oak Street to remain in constant view, serving as a lasting tribute to fallen colleagues. As a lifelong Yucaipa resident and a two-decade veteran of law enforcement, it’s not surprising that Justin Beaver is committed to ensuring the safety of his community. When he learned in 2020 that civic leaders hadn’t invested any additional resources in the Yucaipa Sheriff’s Station since the city’s incorporation in 1989 — despite the population having more than doubled during that time — he sprang into action. Mounted in the front lobby of the Broadmoor Police Department is a tribute to Charles E. Manning, the district’s first and only peace officer to die in the line of duty. The plaque bearing his name was originally housed in the department’s common room for a number of years, but was moved to a more visible area in January of last year — the 60th anniversary of Manning’s death — so that the citizens of Broadmoor could remember and acknowledge the ultimate sacrifice he made in service to the community he called home. Located in the heart of San Diego, the San Diego Police Museum stands as a testament to the rich and storied 130-plus-year history of the city’s police department. The museum features vintage photos, badges, uniforms and more, but perhaps what truly makes the exhibit special is its memorial, which honors the San Diego Police Department officers killed in the line of duty.  Read More
