Friday, May 29 marked the deadline for bills to clear their house of origin, signaling the halfway point of the 2026 legislative session.
So far this year, PORAC has tracked more than 200 bills impacting public safety, labor relations, retirement, criminal justice, officer safety, and law enforcement operations throughout California. Of those, PORAC took formal positions on approximately 90 measures.
PORAC-sponsored bills successfully advanced to the second house, including AB 1383 (McKinnor), which continues efforts to strengthen retirement security for public safety employees; AB 1564 (Ahrens), protecting confidential communications between association members and labor representatives; and AB 2656 (Petrie-Norris), requiring 45-day advance notice before certain AI technologies are implemented in the workplace.
PORAC also achieved key victories by helping stop AB 1958 (Kalra) and SB 1332 (Gonzalez), both of which failed to advance this year.
Several opposed bills also moved to the second house, which is common at this stage of the legislative process. PORAC remains actively engaged on these measures, advocating for amendments and working with legislators and stakeholders to address concerns affecting public safety professionals and the communities they serve.
With the House of Origin deadline behind us, lawmakers now turn their attention to second-house hearings and ongoing budget negotiations. PORAC will continue working to advance its priorities, protect its members’ interests, and ensure the voice of California’s public safety professionals remains heard at the Capitol.
