Symposium Topics: Incidents and Issues Affecting the Environment for Law Enforcement
Ferguson Debrief
The events in Ferguson, Missouri, will forever change policing in the United States. Former CPOA President Rick Braziel has worked in Ferguson and St. Louis County for the past year as part of the team that conducted the after-action assessment of the police response. Join the discussion as Rick reviews lessons learned from Ferguson and provides insight on the future of policing in America.
A Heist Gone Bad
The August 2015 armed robbery of the Bank of the West in Stockton, California, evolved into a multiple-hostage situation in which three heavily armed bank robbery suspects led police officers on an hour-long chase. During the pursuit, officers demonstrated extraordinary bravery and valor, facing a constant barrage of gunfire that disabled more than 14 police vehicles. We’ll review the resulting Police Foundation report, which examines the Stockton Police Department’s response to the robbery, hostage-taking and vehicular pursuit.
Workers’ Comp and Industrial Disability Retirements
This seminar will cover the basics of workers’ compensation, disability retirements and third-party/civil suits for public safety officers. We will discuss cumulative versus specific injuries, presumptive injuries and off-duty injuries, as well as the different types of workers’ compensation benefits. We will explore the return-to-work process, including the use of light duty, time off and appropriate medical treatment, as well as recent developments with regard to utilization review and independent medical review. Attendees will understand permanent disability ratings, apportionment and other benefits.
Legislative and Political Action Update
A review of last year’s passed legislation that affects PORAC members, as well as this year’s pending legislation. We’ll look at the future of the Reid initiative(s) and predictions for the 2016 elections.
