The West Coast Coalition, representing rank-and-file law enforcement officers from California, Washington, Oregon, Hawaii, and Alaska is proud to support the Social Security Fairness Act (H.R. 82), which would restore public servants’ right to retire with dignity.
If passed by both chambers and signed into law, this important bill would repeal the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO). These two federal provisions have unfairly reduced or eliminated retirement benefits for more than 3 million peace officers, teachers, firefighters and other public employees who have devoted much of their careers to public service. The Coalition has long advocated for the repeal of these unjust provisions to right this decades-long wrong.
Thank you to the bill authors, Representatives Garrett Graves (R-LA) and Abigail Spanberger (D-VA), and Senators Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and Susan Collins (R-ME), for leading the effort with bi-partisan support from 329 cosponsors in the House and 62 in the Senate. This is a truly historic moment for public employees across the country who have been suffering under these outdated and harmful provisions. The forthcoming vote represents a significant step toward restoring dignity in retirement for those who have spent their careers protecting and serving their communities.
