What a great Conference this year at the Renaissance Indian Wells Resort & Spa. Our PORAC staff, led by Business and Finance Manager Kim Busman, did a fantastic job of providing each of us with a first-class experience. Thanks to all for a job well done.
It is an honor to have the opportunity to serve the members of our great organization. Whether networking with similar statewide organizations and their leadership or walking the Capitol halls to meet with legislators, I am very fortunate to work for each of you.
Congratulations to PORAC Vice President Brent Meyer on his re-election. Brent has tremendous enthusiasm and has learned a great deal in his first year as your Vice President. There is no doubt in my mind that Brent will serve all of us well for years to come.
The PORAC officers, Executive Committee and Board of Directors will be working hard to make sure that PORAC continues to be the leader throughout the state in representing public safety. We look forward to working together with all association leaders to achieve the goals and maintain the professionalism of PORAC.
During this Conference we said goodbye to the longest-serving elected member of the Board of Directors. George “Joe” Flannagan has spent more than 28 years representing members of the Los Angeles North area, as well as Region III. From all of us, thanks so much, Joe, for your dedication to PORAC. We wish you and Barb many years of continued happiness.
Also leaving your PORAC Board of Directors are Kevin Coyne, Santa Clara County DA Investigators Association; Marc Haiungs, Kern County LEA; Matt Tracey, Santa Clara County DSA; David Winters, South San Joaquin Chapter; Nelson Martinez, San Francisco DSA; and Randy Watkins, Ventura County DSA. Ken Lutz from SEBA is leaving the PORAC Insurance & Benefits Trust, and Aaron Wallace from Sacramento POA is departing from our Legal Defense Fund. We wish all of them the best of luck in their future endeavors.
This year during our Conference of Members, representatives from Region I brought forward a bylaw proposal to voluntarily contribute an additional $2 per member per month specifically to fight any pension initiative. It was first brought forward as an emergency proposal. All members recessed and broke into regions to discuss the proposed bylaw. Within a very short time, the members reconvened and a vote was taken. Once the vote was completed and determined to be an exigent circumstance, the language was brought before the Conference of Members. With overwhelming support, the following bylaw was changed (new text is shown in italics). It was very clear that the Conference of Members of PORAC had spoken.
PORAC Bylaws Article III SECTION 1.
Active membership organizations shall pay dues at the rate of seven dollars ($7.00) per capita per month. Active membership organizations shall pay dues at the rate of nine dollars ($9.00) per capita per month beginning January 1, 2015, during calendar year 2015 and 2016, and this additional two-dollar ($2.00) assessment shall be specifically allocated to defeat any California pension reform initiatives that may be proposed during this time. Each affiliated active organization may opt out of the additional two-dollar ($2.00) assessment by conveying this decision in writing to PORAC. Active membership organizations in the Nevada Chapter shall pay dues at the rate of six ($6.00) per capita per month. Non-active dues paying members, as listed below, shall pay dues in the manner prescribed in the Bylaws and Standing Rules.
Both Brent and I are looking forward to getting to work and facing the challenges in the coming years. Know that PORAC once again will be the leader in California representing public safety and networking with many of our coalitions to fight for all of our members.
This year’s Conference of Members is behind us. We are now headed to the holiday season. Whether you celebrate Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah or another holiday, I hope you are able to enjoy a quiet and safe season with your family and friends. During this time, please take the opportunity to reflect on the members of our PORAC family who are no longer with their loved ones, and keep them in your thoughts and prayers. From all of us at PORAC, we wish you a wonderful holiday season and a merry Christmas.
