At approximately 9:00 p.m. Wednesday,
February 6, LAPD received a call from a man stating he had
killed three members of his family. Initial officers on the
scene came upon the suspect barricaded inside a home in the
19800 block of Welby Way in the San Fernando Valley. The SWAT
team was subsequently called in and gunfire was exchanged with
the suspect as officers broke through the front door. Two SWAT
officers were shot immediately upon entry.
The officers were rushed to Northridge
Medical Center, where Officer Randal Simmons (51) died just
after 1:00 a.m. The other, Officer James Veenstra (51),
underwent surgery and is expected to survive. Both officers had
been with the SWAT unit more than 20 years.
The suspect was found dead in the home
almost 12 hours after the standoff began.
Officer Simmons is survived by his wife
Lisa, son (15), and daughter (13).
