DEFINITION: Under direction from the Commander and Chief of Police: oversee and participate in all work activities, related to the enforcement of laws, the prevention of crimes, general investigations of crimes, accidents, and cases; to coordinate investigations with other agencies; to perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility and administrative tasks in support of the Police Department.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A bachelors degree or higher from an accredited college or university is highly desirable. Experience in lead, supervisory or field training officer capacity is desirable. The City of Santa Monica is seeking an individual to plan, schedule and administer all activities involving use of the police department firing range and related facilities; maintains the department armory and issues weapons and supplies to police personnel; orders, stores, and manages department weapons and ammunition; supervises and exercises technical supervision over the collateral-duty shooting cadre; conducts weapons training, weapons inspections and repairs.

High school graduation or the equivalent; three years of recent, paid experience in the operation of a police or military small arms firing range.

Possession of a valid California Class C driver license. Completion of a basic Handgun and rifle armorer course. A National Rifle Association Small Arms Instructor’s Certificate and a POST approved Range Master Certificate must be obtained within one (1) year of hire date. Comparable certificates may quality if approved by the Chief of Police.
